The Giants Causeway is
located on the North Antrim coast in Northurn Ireland.
It has been said that the Giants Causeway is the 8th wonder of the world,
attracting visitors for centuries, and even now is Irelands number one
visitor attraction.
The Causeway is made of igneous
rock this rock is called 'basalt', one of the more common of igneous
rock, but what isn't so common is the shape as the majority of these
columns have a hexagonal shape, but vary from four to eight sides.
There are roughly about 40,000 of these columns packed tightly together,
which were formed thousands of years ago by volcanic activity.
They stretch from the foot of
the cliffs, then disappearing into the sea, there are also columns set
into the cliffs, looking like oversized church organ pipes.
The tallest of these hexagonal shaped columns are about 40 feet high,
and the tops of these columns can be used as stepping stones, so it
is possible to walk from one end of the Giants Causeway to the other.
